1.
so silent now/the slowing wind, so different then from all we knew/ in warming bloom/we ran in the dew among deadened trees/ and, i spoke for you/with the cold hard wind as a blade cutting in/ when the frost is keen, the day is no friend/ and memory takes your place/ silent now/in a softening glaze of quite shy sound/ the tears run away in a haunting song /as full as the moon of that haunted day/ when we stood as a blade/when the cold hard wind cuts in wild desire/ and i’m fading away in a haunted fire/ and memory takes your place .
2.
Mirror 05:22
i’ve seen the way you look at all the things i despise/ i’ve seen you look around for somewhere darker to hide/ till every hint of colour is evaded at last/ till yr just empty colours staring out from the glass/ mirror, show to me - mirror, slowly ... sing this stolen beauty in yr cracked voiced curse/ i’ll sing yr stolen music to an indifferent world/ i’m grasped by you in horror, grabbed up in a failing/ in treachery, destruction, in a self-betraying - mirror, show to me, mirror - slowly see something kind .
3.
you throw water at the sky/and pray that it won’t fall on you/ you fill yr empty n hollow insides/in emptiness nurtured entombed/ the cold’s rising curtailing yr mind/changing all that you view/ its slow caution will flood and then thrive and override the world you knew/ there’s no quarter given yr pride, there’s only devouring gloom/ a slow torment of deadening drive/ a defeat that’s swallowing you/ there’s no measure of pity for pride/ you break in the dust of yr ruin/ you throw handfuls of water at the sky/ and you pray that it won’t leave you dry/ and drown those around you .
4.
born in blind thorns/gazing on/ first spring awaiting/gazing on/ tho these creatures made this song/ it is you, just you singing on and on/ held there spellbound/glittering/ blazing unearthly/trembling/ tho these creatures are unknowing/ it is you, just you their longing brings/ these two thorns tangle, run thru me/ and the wide, lost world i see so clear/ blossoming thorns come real to me/ah for why, i can’t ask/ but i draw them nearer me/ these two thorns will bury me/and the light and dark belong near me/ sun drawn thorns embrace and be/ ah for why i don’t ask/and, its love i see .
5.
Comedown 03:56
comedown /to walk the living maze/ come out /rarefied in angel wings/ come now /to brake down, to fall down/ at long last i reach for you/among all the living things/ at long last i reach for you/in this braking down place/ at long last i reach to you/and i’m exhausted, estranged/ you take the day/and you take it away/you take it for yours/ comedown /yr vanishing, finishing/ comedown /in dead of night/the dead of winter/ comedown /your silences paralyse/ comedown /be suddenly alive again/ come out /be burning, be sentient/ come out /and walk among the living things .
6.
Short Lives 03:32
an instrumental, but ... the lyrics might well begin like THIS : I know that you are there somewhere/ but I have no feeling/ you have no feeling/ this is a place of fear/ this is a place for the displaced of soul .
7.
Vostok 04:32
where can I go, with caution as a name? - it keeps me alive … tho the careless would blame and they’d swear that they know they’d be without fear, know no shame : they’ll swear – yes they’ll swear that it’s a solitary thing, a separate path that the heart will never wear – and they’ll never display and give a way there… they say they’ve no right to be there/they’d claim the day! beware . should i heed yr words?should i heed yr cry and surrender myself to yr breaking sigh that comes here today, sealing your way?… should i trust yr word? /… can i trust to fate? /should I heed those words? should I heed that cry ?… because you know i’ve been there, to a fearful love - and i’ve come to be afraid, afraid of being alone/but, i’ll say n i’ll swear i never meant to be there . for i’d be there, for love . i’d not make that mistake .
8.
i can’t be here, feel here/feeling at such a loss to breathe in here/ and be/where I don’t come from/the morning’s empty, waiting/ something has took the song and brought it nowhere/somewhere I don’t feel strong . you, you make this song - you, you waited too long . and i can’t see here, speak here, and i can find no air/ there’s no light to ignite - i only stop, then stare/ there’s no place to stand, nowhere/ there is nowhere of worth, there’s only forgetting/ brought back down to earth/ you, you make this song - you, you waited too long .
9.
Radiance 03:03
why can i not see you?/ i am in the room/ and i want to see your face/ it’s in me now/a distance surrounds/ i’m lost somehow/ n i’m drowning now/ n i’ve lost the ground i’d claim/ in loveloss/hiding/ lustre/love lorn/waiting/wanting/ a one simple way/ in hunger/fervour/languor & sighing/ silent/yearning/further away/ i want to touch you/ and my empty hands can know no grace/ and i look to you/i find your gaze is far now/ yr not reaching out/ tho I sense that now, we are the same .
10.
Wild Lament 01:29
An instrumental - but the lyrics MIGHT well go something like so : I am summer - you are winter/ I am something - you are nothing .
11.
step out on any morning/far now yr voice of sighs/ where, now yr heart is calmest/soon will be the day/ drink deep where you wait longest/ for a long calling surprise/ comes now to take up the promise/ soon will be the day/ come round to sweet reason/ step out/do not hide/ drink deeper than every sad eye/ soon will be the day /to no longer wait in wonder/ for a long calling surprise/comes now/you’ll wait no longer/ soon will be the day .
12.
Ink Horn 05:02
one star laughing/one star dazzling, taunts you so/ one star looking/one star falling/where’er you go/ one star wakened/one star bears you, liberates you so/ one star takes you/one star shapes you, as if you know/ one star waking/one star calling, taunts you over n over/one star tells you/ one star leads you, points you home/there’s one star awakened/ there’s one star accepts you, here where you stand/n one star takes you/ one star shapes you, and then you know/ stars a-falling/ascending a-glow/

about

Eyeless in Gaza : 40 years of No Noise & Invisibility – and there’s a reason for it. From where we live we can see the infamous Hartshill Ridge, a unique landscape feature carved by ice age glaciers. Here there is a clear vantage point : you can see over severl counties – you can see the bastards coming to get you . It’s the reason people first settled here, its the Romans settled here and it’s the reason Boadicea chose nearby Mancetter to route those self same Romans. Nuneaton – with the literate dissent/social realism/radical agnosticism of George Eliot, just round the corner from George Fox and inner light. Ok: Eyeless in Gaza, for 40 years now, music all the way up till 2019 – and these are just some of the push me pull you reasons that I still feel I just can’t quite let it leave me – Martyn Bates, August 2020.

Biog stuff? It’s always changing. Re creativity, a wise man said: ‘‘It doesn’t matter where, as long as it’s out of this world’’. This seems a good way to feel about it all ... the music should be like a drugged dream, poem, hope, prayer - probably a blues .
